Matt Fitzpatrick has criticized the FedEx Cup playoff format, saying the system does not properly reward the player who performs best throughout the PGA Tour season.
The Englishman shared his concerns ahead of the 2026 BMW Championship, the second event of the playoffs. His comments focused particularly on how the season-long points race is reset before the Tour Championship at East Lake.
Matt Fitzpatrick believes the player who earns the most points from January through the end of the season should be crowned FedExCup champion. He suggested that the current system can allow a strong performance over a short period to outweigh months of consistent results.
Matt Fitzpatrick Questions the Playoff System
Matt Fitzpatrick acknowledged that playoffs are an important part of American sports, but he believes golf presents a different challenge because of the individual nature of the game.
He said the current system “doesn’t make sense” because it can reduce the importance of a player’s performance over the entire season. In his view, the golfer who has been the best from the start of the year through the playoffs should receive the biggest reward.
“It just doesn’t make sense to me,” he said. “I’ve said a lot about the playoffs. I understand the playoffs in the U.S. are a very big thing in other sports, and it’s obviously hard to do that with golf because of the format of golf. I think the player who has played the best all year from January to next week deserves to be the FedExCup champion, the guy who has made the most points, which, you know, is going to be Scottie Scheffler pretty much. And that’s how it should be.
Matt Fitzpatrick also questioned the way points have been handled during the playoffs in previous years. He argued that giving players the chance to make huge jumps in the standings after one strong week can be unfair to those who performed consistently for months.
Matt Fitzpatrick Wants More Reward for Consistency
The 2022 U.S. Open champion suggested that the PGA Tour has already moved toward addressing some of these concerns by reducing the impact of the playoff events on the standings. He believes that approach makes more sense because a single tournament should not completely erase the advantage built during the regular season.
Matt Fitzpatrick’s argument comes as the 50-player field prepares for the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club. The tournament will determine which 30 players advance to the Tour Championship at East Lake.
The current system gives the players at the top of the standings an advantage heading into the final event, but Matt Fitzpatrick’s concern is that the eventual champion should reflect the entire season rather than just the final stage.
