Who would have thought a lottery ticket prank could be this divisive?
Criticism of Charley Hull’s trick on her caddie, Adam Woodward, earlier this week at the AIG Women’s Open finally reached the world’s No. 7-ranked player after she carded a 2-under 69 on Thursday.
The five-time major runner-up openly rejected the feedback, and told reporters she holds no regrets for duping her caddie into believing he won $100,000 on a fake scratch-off.
“And people that have complains about it, I would say loosen up,” she said.
Hull sits T-8 after the opening round at Royal Lytham. She took one opening question about her round before taking a quadrant of follow-ups about whether or not she would still buy the fake lotto tickets and deploy them the way she did.
“Yeah, 100 percent,” Hull said in her post-round interview. “[Adam] thought it was funny after. He’s not uptight. Like it’s a joke. If people don’t like it, they can lump it — do you know what I mean?”
The 30-year-old Englishwoman said she was unaware of the reaction to the prank as she deletes social media apps from her phone during tournament week in an attempt “to keep in the present moment.”
She said she’ll re-add the apps when she goes home but still never reads the comments online.
“At the end of the day, I just got to have a good week, and at the end of the week I’ll buy him 100 scratch cards,” she said. “Hopefully he can earn more money than that as well this week if we play well.”
